East of Gainesville along SR-20 the county changes character. The rolling hardwood gives way to planted pine and palmetto flatwoods, the ground flattens out and sits lower, and the parcels get larger and more rural. Around Hawthorne, between Lochloosa Lake and Orange Lake, you are into hunting tracts, timber ground, lake-country property and rural homesteads.

This is the most straightforward mulching ground in the county and the trickiest ground for timing. Flatwoods hold water. A parcel that a machine walks across easily in February can be a rutting problem in August.

Why Hawthorne Land Is Different

Timing drives everything out here. Flatwoods sit low and drain slowly, so the practical clearing window runs through the dry season, roughly October to May. Summer work on saturated ground ruts the parcel you are paying to improve and costs more per acre for less progress. If you have a Hawthorne tract to clear, booking it for winter is worth real money. The seasonal guide covers the tradeoffs.

Wetland proximity is the second factor. Lochloosa, Orange Lake and the drainage between them mean a lot of parcels out here have low areas that may fall under water management district jurisdiction. A delineation before work is cheap insurance compared with finding out afterward.

On the other hand, this is the best mulching ground in the county. Dense palmetto and gallberry understory under planted pine is exactly what a forestry mulcher is built for, and clearing here typically costs less per acre than the hardwood ground to the west. Hunting tracts in particular do well with selective understory work: open the ground layer, keep the pine, improve the forage.

County tree rules apply as everywhere in unincorporated Alachua County: over an acre, a permit for any tree 8 inches or larger. See the permit guide.

Hawthorne FAQs

When should I schedule clearing out here?

Dry season, October through May, for anything low. Flatwoods hold water and summer work on saturated ground is slower, more expensive and harder on the parcel.

Can you cut trails and shooting lanes?

Yes. Trail and lane work is straightforward mulching, and it prices well because there is no debris to move. Mark your routes ahead of the crew arriving.

How much does palmetto flatwoods clearing cost?

Mulching moderate palmetto and scrub commonly runs $1,200 to $2,000 per acre, with heavier stems above that. This is generally cheaper ground than the hardwood country west of Gainesville.

What about wetlands near the lakes?

Low areas near Lochloosa and Orange Lake may fall under water management district jurisdiction. Get a delineation on anything wet before scheduling machine work.
