Archer is small-town Florida with working land around it. Along SR-24 heading southwest toward Bronson the parcels get bigger and the use gets more agricultural: horse property, cattle, hay ground, hunting tracts and homesteads on five to fifty acres. Why Archer Land Is Different
Gopher tortoises. The sandhill and scrub around Archer and out toward the Watermelon Pond area is prime habitat, and burrows on a parcel here are the rule rather than the exception. Any work within 25 feet of a burrow counts as a disturbance under FWC rules, and tortoises have to be relocated under permit by an authorized agent before clearing begins. That process has a real timeline attached to it.
This is the single most common source of delay on southwest county jobs, and it is entirely avoidable. We look for burrows during the site walk and tell you what you are dealing with before anything gets scheduled. Finding them the morning the machines arrive is how a two-week project becomes a two-month one.
The second Archer-specific factor is fire. Deep sand, wiregrass and palmetto carry fire well, which is exactly why this landscape exists, and it is also why understory reduction around structures matters more here than in most of the county. Going into the spring dry stretch with heavy fuel against a barn or a house is a risk worth spending money to reduce.
